An ER Doctor on Triaging Your ''Crazy Busy'' Life

Nowadays, life is more stressful than ever because everything goes so fast. In this optic, many people can feel a loss of control and they qualify their day as '' crazy busy ''. This reality is what makes this TED talk pertinent and interesting because Dr. Darria Long shared her way to take control of the busy days without getting crazy. According to her, when we are in crazy mode, we are less capable of handling situations because of stress. Fortunately, she thinks that it is possible for everyone to handle the busy by entering what she calls the '' ready mode ''. Most importantly, to be in ready mode, we have to triage the situations instead of overreacting to everything like it all has the same importance.  Furthermore, we need to accomplish the most crucial tasks first without being distracted by less important things. Then, she talked about the importance of being prepared. It reduces the daily decisions we have to make and ultimately, our efficiency. Moreover, she said that we must get out of our head. Otherwise, we are derailed by our internal monologue. In this tunnel vision, it is impossible to solve problems properly. Her trick to get out of her mind is to focus on someone else, on the situation in order to see what she can do to help.

Millennials in Medicine: Doctors of the Future

Our generation is called the millennials. Millennials were born between 1980 and the early 2000s. As Dr. Daniel Wozniczka, an internist doctor, mentioned, we hear a ton of negative stereotypes about us: we are narcissistic, lazy, unfocused, addicted to technology and social media, etc. This TED talk is important because it contributes to glorifying the image of our generation and proving that we will have a crucial role to play. Dr. Wozniczka focused more on the positive. According to him, all millennials have the aspiration to have an impact on the world. Also, the internist said that with this wish to change things, our future doctors are the ones who will be able to improve the health system. Nowadays, being a doctor is not what it used to be. Despite his true love for medicine, Dr. Wozniczka doesn't like the job like many other doctors. He thinks there is too much paperwork. They are forced to see more patients in less time. Dr. Wozniczka said that 300 to 400 doctors commit suicide every year and that, according to a study, half of the doctors would make a different profession. The internist believes that it is because our hospitals and the medical laws are ruled by people who know nothing about medicine. Dr. Wozniczka declared that our future millennial doctors will change this because it is a characteristic of our generation to '' fight the system ''. Moreover, in the United States, 65 medicine faculties offer an MD/MBA. This way, future doctors will be able to take part in the administration of our health system to make changes that will truly help.

Also, with a master in business administration (MBA) and a master in public health (MPH), the internist dedicates a part of his career to improving the health system by proposing solutions. Dr. Wozniczka is part of this system so he is able to see what are the problems and what are the best solutions. Also, his training gives him credibility.

  2. Great choices ! I also loved Dr Long's TedTalk. I personally liked her analogy to medical color codes a lot and I think that perhaps adding a brief explanation of that in your summary could help people better understand the concepts she talks about and the difference between crazy busy and ready mode !

    1. I am glad to know that we have an interest in common, Mégane! Indeed, I agree that Dr. Long's TED talk is interesting. Also, this TED talk is even more pertinent nowadays because stress is omnipresent. Knowing how to deal with it is tremendously crucial. Moreover, I agree that her color analogy makes the concept easier to understand. I will think about a way to talk about her analogy. Thank you!

  3. Excellent TED Talks! Xavier, as I was reading your summary on Dr Long's TED Talk, I could instantly relate to "crazy busy". I think we all do some sort of triage, but it is sometimes difficult not to feel overwhelmed by everything requiring our attention. That's why I am assessing this blog on a Sunday evening, rather than cleaning up my house, hahaha! As for your second TED Talk, I keep convincing my family and friends that the "lazy, good-for-nothing" teens and young adults are what we need to make this world a better place. We (I can include myself, the dates fit, woohoo!) know what we want, we are knowledgeable, and I find that most youth are empathetic and want to pay it forward. It that isn't a beautiful thing, I don't know what is! As far as I'm concerned, I am 100% confident that millennials are what we need to make a change!

    - Make sure to cite your sources using an appropriate format
    - Where did you take your information on Dr. Long and Dr. Wozniczka? Do not forget to mention these sites if the information was not taken directly off your TED Talks.
    - Plural (one): our future doctors are the one
    - Word choice (that): our future doctors are the one that will be able to improve the health system (you are talking about people, use 'who').
    - Same mistake as above: ruled by people that know nothing about medicine.
    - You have a tendency to mainly use the pronoun 'he'. Make sure you go back to the antecedent noun from time to time, as it will ease comprehension of your text.
